Microsoft Wants To Bring IE6 Browser Usage Down To Under 1%

March 5, 2011
The official countdown to get rid of the Internet Explorer 6 has finally begun, and Microsoft wants you to join hands to "move the world off the 10-year old browser" that still has 12% share worldwide (or about 240 million internet users) – - that’s more than Chrome!

IE6′s funeral was held exactly an year ago, but many are still hanging on to it, Microsoft spokesperson Roger Capriotti tells us. But the company now wants to bring the worldwide usage of Internet Explorer 6 down to "under 1%".

To propel the mission, Microsoft launched ie6countdown.com, which will continue to watch "Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide," started yeterday.
Is there a need? The answer is, YES! Today, it’s all about web standards, and IE6 is apparently very old. By bringing the browser’s usage share down to < 1%, Microsoft will be saving hours of work for web developers, who can then care less about the compatibility of their websites on IE6. (But 1% still means 20 million users.)
As We see it, Asians – - China (34%), South Korea (25%) and India (12.3%) – - are intense fans of Internet Explorer 6, and seem to rely heavily on it.

Google‘s Gmail is expected to drop IE6 support later this year.
